▍ ❝   HOW THEY MET:Kit met Damon at the Mystic Grill during an ordinary night. She was new to town, tucked into a corner booth with a drink, some food, and her laptop. She clearly wasn't a Mystic Falls local - Damon knew everyone who lived there.He noticed her immediately, half because she looked like she didn't fit in, and half because she was alone. He sat with her fully intending to amuse himself and possibly use her as a snack later. Instead, her sarcasm and wit bounced right back at him. She didn't fall for his charm the way other women did easily. She actually thought he was kind of an asshole. One drink turned into an actual conversation. He learned a little bit about why she moved there and he told her a little bit about the town's history.By the end of it, he walked away without compelling her and without feeding from her. The only thing he walked away from her with was her name and an annoying curious buzz in the back of his head about this human woman who he thought would turn into background noise in the town like everyone else.

▍ ❝   BEST FRIENDS... OR MORE?Kit and Damon's friendship develops slowly and almost accidentally as she becomes a regular visitor at the boarding house thanks to Caroline "adopting" her into her group with Bonnie and Elena.Once Kit is accidentally exposed to the supernatural world, and Damon is the one who saves her from a "bad place, bad time" vampire attack, their connection shifts. He becomes the one who explains the rules to her. They fall into an easy rhythm, Kit showing up to hang out with Damon after hard shifts at her job, that usually turn into late-night conversations and lazy evenings on the couch. Damon hovers near her without meaning to, his instincts automatically putting himself between her and anything dangerous.Eventually, the edges of their friendship start to blur into something that doesn't feel like friendship anymore. Kit is at the boarding house more often than not. He notices how she likes to stay around him when she doesn't need to. She notices the way his eyes soften when he looks at her and how he looks for her in a room first.Friends around them sense the shift before they do. They still call each other friends, but the air between them feels heavier and more tense. Goodnights begin to stretch, hugs last longer than they should, and every "accidental" touch feels like fire.Neither of them want to lose what they have, so they don't talk about it.

▍ ❝  PRESENT DAY:In the present day, Kit and Damon are no longer skirting the line between friends and something more. They're officially together, deeply in love in a way that only they can understand. Kit now lives full time at the boarding house, taking up space in the best ways for Damon.Damon is still Damon, even while in a relationship with her. The difference is now every choice he makes has her in its orbit. He doesn't give long speeches about how much he cares; he just shows up. His softness with her comes in quiet moments with her. He knows her better than anyone. For someone who's spent over a century convincing himself that he doesn't need anyone, Damon has somehow ended up with a life built around one human who refuses to leave him and refuses to allow him to push her away.Kit is still anxious, still overthinks, still all too aware of how breakable she is next to vampires and witches and werewolves and whatever else Mystic Falls decides to throw at them every given week. Being with Damon has given her confidence. She knows the rules. She catches details and tells about Damon nobody else can. ▍ ❝   EARLY LIFE.Damon Salvatore was born on June 18th, 1839 as the eldest son of Giuseppe and Lillian Salvatore. His childhood in Mystic Falls was strict and controlled; Giuseppe expected obedience and discipline, and Damon learned early how to hide his feelings behind sarcasm and defiance. He was close to his younger brother, Stefan. Damon was the rebellious one, the disappointment, the son who pushed against his father's expectations and took the blame more often than not. He lost his mother to consumption at the age of 19.As a young man, Damon served as a Confederate soldier in the Civil War, more out of obligation and circumstance than any deep belief in the cause. When he returned and met Katherine Pierce in 1864, he fell hard and fast, mistaking her attention for unconditional love. He fell in love with Katherine fast and built his entire sense of his future around her.Damon's human life ended violently during the chaos following Katherine's capture. With her blood in his system, he was shot and killed by his own father while trying to free Katherine and escape with her and Stefan. He was later forced to complete the transition by Stefan, setting him on a path of vengeance and darkness.

▍ ❝   VAMPIRE LIFE.Damon spent the last century and a half leaning hard into his new vampirism and immortality. Where Stefan tried to control his bloodlust, Damon fully embraced feeding on humans, moving through the world as a charming, vicious predator who rarely apologized for the wreckage he left behind and the lives he ruined.In 1953, one of his own relatives, Joseph Salvatore, betrayed him, luring him back to Mystic Falls and handing him over to the Augustine Society. He was kept as test subject 21051, and Damon spent about five years being dissected, experimented on, and displayed at Whitmore's parties. His only companion during this time was Lorenzo. Their friendship helped Damon hang onto what was left of his humanity. During the 1959 New Year's party, after planning for months with Enzo, Damon managed to break free. The building caught fire, and Damon couldn't free Enzo from his vervain-soaked cage. To survive the guilt of leaving his friend behind, he flipped his humanity switch and walked away. He spent the next decades hunting down the Whitmore bloodline in revenge.When Damon returned to Mystic Falls, he was 170+ years old. He initially acts as an antagonist, focused on freeing Katherine and causing chaos and violence, but slowly shifts into a reluctant protector as he forms new attachments to people within the town.

▍ ❝  PRESENT DAY.In the present, Damon still lives in Mystic Falls as a vampire. He's still carrying the weight of his violent past and trying to atone for his mistakes that he will never completely outrun.He is long past the point of chasing Katherine's ghost, and his relationship with Elena Gilbert has settled into something honest, their relationship part of his past for good.Damon has shifted from a terrorizer of the town to one of its primary's defenders. When something threatens the town or his people, he's usually the first to do something about it. He still makes decisions no one else wants to make, and crosses lines that no one else wants to cross. He's still more likely to break someone's neck than talk things out, but now it's in service of keeping his loved ones alive and not just because he's bored.Somewhere in the middle of all of that, Kit enters his life. She slowly and quietly becomes the person he orbits. With her, Damon lets the mask slip; she sees who he is and stays anyway, challenging him without trying to "fix" him. He has a good relationship with everyone in the gang, and would burn the world for any of them.He's still a cocky sarcastic ass while doing it, though.
